This Privacy Policy explains how showbuild.co (“ShowBuild”, “we”, “us”, or “our”) collects, uses, shares, and protects information when you visit or use our website and services.

Overview

ShowBuild (https://showbuild.co) is a community board where makers list the products and projects they are building. This Privacy Policy explains, in detail, what information we collect when you visit or use ShowBuild, why we collect it, how we use and share it, and the choices and rights you have. By using ShowBuild, you agree to the practices described here.

Information we collect

We collect the following categories of information, depending on how you use ShowBuild:

• Account information via Google Sign-In. When you sign in with Google, we receive your Google account name, email address, and profile picture (avatar URL). We use this solely to create and identify your ShowBuild account. We never receive your Google password. We do not access your Google contacts, files, emails, or any other Google services.
• Profile information. When you first sign in, you choose a public username. This username is displayed publicly next to your submissions, votes, and comments.
• Submission information. When you submit a build, we store the project name, website URL, one-line description, and category you provide. This information is displayed publicly on the board.
• Votes and comments. We record which submissions you vote on and the comments you post. Comments are displayed publicly with your username; your vote count per project is public, but which specific items you individually voted on is visible only to you (and site administrators for moderation purposes).
• Usage and technical information. When you access ShowBuild, our hosting and database providers automatically process standard technical logs, including your IP address, browser type and version, device type, operating system, referring page, and the time and date of your request. These logs are used to operate, secure, and troubleshoot the service.
• Communications. If you contact us by email, we keep your message and your email address so we can respond and keep a record of the conversation.

How we use information

We use the information we collect to:

• Create and manage your ShowBuild account and authenticate you when you sign in (Google account name, email, and profile picture).
• Display your username, submissions, votes, and comments on the public board.
• Operate, maintain, and improve the features and performance of ShowBuild.
• Calculate points and rankings for submissions.
• Detect, investigate, and prevent spam, fraud, abuse, and other harmful activity, including verifying backlinks and enforcing submission limits.
• Send service-related communications, such as responses to your questions or requests.
• Comply with our legal obligations and enforce our Terms of Service.

Legal bases for processing (EEA/UK)

If you are located in the European Economic Area or the United Kingdom, we process your personal data on the following legal bases:

• Performance of a contract: processing your account information, submissions, votes, and comments to provide the ShowBuild service you requested.
• Legitimate interests: processing technical logs and usage information to secure the service, prevent abuse, and improve ShowBuild, in ways you would reasonably expect.
• Consent: where you have given consent (for example, if optional cookies or communications are used), you may withdraw it at any time.
• Legal obligation: processing where required by applicable law.

Cookies and similar technologies

ShowBuild uses only cookies and local storage that are strictly necessary to keep you signed in and secure. Specifically, our authentication provider sets a session cookie/local storage entry after you sign in so you do not have to sign in again on every page load.

We do not use advertising cookies, cross-site tracking cookies, or third-party behavioral analytics cookies.

You can clear or block cookies in your browser settings. If you block the necessary authentication cookie, you will not be able to stay signed in.

How and with whom we share information

We do not sell your personal information, and we do not share it with third parties for their own marketing purposes. We share information only in the following limited ways:

• Publicly on ShowBuild: your username, the builds you submit, your comment text, and vote totals are visible to all visitors of showbuild.co.
• Service providers: we rely on carefully selected companies to run ShowBuild, listed in the “Our service providers” section below. They process data on our behalf under contract.
• Legal requirements: we may disclose information if required by law, legal process, or a valid government request, or to protect the rights, property, and safety of ShowBuild, our users, or the public.
• Business transfers: if ShowBuild is ever merged, acquired, or sold, user information may be transferred as part of that transaction, subject to this policy.

Our service providers

The following companies process personal data on our behalf to operate ShowBuild:

• Google LLC (Google Sign-In): authenticates your identity when you choose “Sign in with Google”. We receive your name, email address, and profile picture. Google’s handling of this data is described in Google’s Privacy Policy.
• Supabase (Supabase Inc.): provides our account database, authentication backend, and data storage. Your account details, submissions, votes, and comments are stored on Supabase infrastructure.
• Cloudflare: provides website hosting, content delivery, and request security. Cloudflare processes technical request logs, including IP addresses, to deliver and protect the site.

Google user data

When you use “Sign in with Google”, ShowBuild receives only your Google name, email address, and profile picture. We use this information exclusively to create your account, identify you when you return, and display your username.

We do not sell, rent, or share your Google user data with any third party for advertising or any other purpose, except the service providers listed above who help us operate ShowBuild. We do not use Google user data to train machine learning or artificial intelligence models, and we do not transfer it to third parties for their own use.

You can revoke ShowBuild’s access to your Google account at any time from your Google Account settings (Security → Third-party apps with account access). If you revoke access, your ShowBuild account will remain until you request deletion.

Public visibility of your content

Submissions, comments, and usernames on ShowBuild are public by design: anyone visiting the site can read them, and search engines can index them.

Your email address is never displayed publicly. If you submit a build, only your chosen username appears next to it.

Administrators of ShowBuild can see the email address associated with accounts for moderation, abuse prevention, and support purposes.

Data retention

We keep your information only as long as needed for the purposes described in this policy:

• Account information: kept while your account exists. If you request account deletion, we delete or anonymize your profile; submissions you made may remain on the board but are de-linked from your identity, unless you also ask us to remove them.
• Submissions, votes, and comments: kept while they remain useful to the public board, or until you or an administrator remove them.
• Technical logs: kept for a limited period (typically up to 90 days) for security and troubleshooting.
• Email correspondence: kept for up to 2 years so we can maintain a record of support requests.

Your rights and choices

Depending on where you live, you may have some or all of the following rights regarding your personal data:

• Access: request a copy of the personal data we hold about you.
• Correction: ask us to correct information that is inaccurate or incomplete.
• Deletion: request that we delete your account and personal data, subject to legal retention requirements.
• Portability: request an export of your data in a machine-readable format.
• Objection and restriction: object to or ask us to limit certain processing.
• Withdrawal of consent: withdraw consent you previously gave, without affecting prior lawful processing.
• Non-discrimination: exercise your rights without being treated differently for doing so.
• California residents: we do not sell or share personal information as defined by the CCPA/CPRA, and California users may exercise the rights above by contacting us.
• EEA/UK users: you also have the right to complain to your local data protection authority.

How to delete your account or data

You can delete your data at any time by emailing hello@showbuild.co from the email address associated with your account, with the subject “Delete my account”. We will delete your account and personal information within 30 days, except where we must keep certain records by law.

You can also remove individual submissions or comments yourself from the site, or ask us to remove them on your behalf.

International data transfers

ShowBuild is operated with service providers whose servers may be located in the United States or other countries. When your data is transferred internationally, we rely on appropriate safeguards, such as the data processing terms and standard contractual clauses offered by our service providers.

Children’s privacy

ShowBuild is not directed at children, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13 (or the equivalent minimum age in your jurisdiction). If you believe a child has created an account or provided personal information to us, please contact us at hello@showbuild.co and we will delete it.

Security

We protect your information using industry-standard measures, including encrypted connections (HTTPS/TLS) for all traffic, access controls that limit who can view account data, and hosting with established providers (Supabase and Cloudflare) that maintain their own security programs.

No method of transmission or storage is completely secure. If you believe your account has been compromised, contact us immediately at hello@showbuild.co.

Changes to this Privacy Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy as ShowBuild, our practices, or applicable laws change. The “Last updated” date at the top of this page shows when the policy was last revised.

If we make material changes, we will provide a prominent notice on the site or, where appropriate, notify you by email before the changes take effect.
